A global definition of SD

The concept of sustainable development requires a successful inter-relationship between three components - the environment, society and the economy. In SD, no aspect is overlooked; all three are balanced and each one is able to flourish; together this contributes to an improved quality of life for all, now and in the future.  According to the 1987 Brundtland Commission, a group of world experts convened by the United Nations to address the deterioration of the natural environment and discuss how economies could grow without adversely compromising the Earth's ecosystems,  "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
